Come and meet the monkeys, located in the ZooParc de Beauval’s historic pathways, between the penguins and the sea lion show. Barbary macaques, capuchins, moustached guenons, spider monkeys… Discover fantastic primate species and their unparalleled agility!
Which is Europe’s only monkey?
I promise you one does exist!
Although we mainly imagine monkeys living in Asia, Africa, and South America, there is a species living in southern Europe, in Spain! This species is the Barbary macaque, also known as the Barbary ape. You can observe this mountain-dwelling monkey adapted to harsh climates at Beauval!

Passing between monkey exhibits and wooded islands
Next to the monkey exhibits, wide, sunny pathways bordered by luscious vegetation await you. These are excellent places for observation, allowing you to take your time to enjoy the acrobatic antics of the primates in their play areas!

Beauval Nature is helping save the Barbary macaque
Classified as “Endangered” by the IUCN, the barbary macaque is threatened by loss of habitat due to intensive logging and land clearing. Further to this, the barbary macaque also suffers from illegal trade and persecution by local populations.
The Barbary Macaque Awareness & Conservation association is supported by the Beauval Nature association and studies the relationship between local populations and barbary macaques. Shepherds are now tasked with locating populations of barbary macaques and monitoring them. Several other awareness-raising programmes have been put in place, especially in schools.
